The Ruth Project

June 2023

We are at The Farm!

What an incredible journey!  The Lord has been faithful every step of the way, and as of February 16, a 33-acre farm in Sycamore is now part of The Ruth Project!  There’s no doubt the Lord was all along preparing this refuge of hope just for us, because it includes everything that was on our “wish list” for our next step in caring for foster families.  In fact, already in the first quarter, over 200 Ruth Project family members, volunteers, donors, and community partners have enjoyed a meal around the Farmhouse table!  We’ve launched our monthly programs like “Pause & Play” and “Friday Night Party Night,” all which underscore how The Farm is providing the space and time that foster parents so badly need to meet other parents, share honestly, and forge friendships that are becoming a lifeline as they journey together.  At the same time, their kids are experiencing intentional, structured play in a space created just for them!

We cannot be more excited about this precious place!  One thing is for certain – you are the reason we can take this giant step forward.  Please make plans to come visit!  Tammy McMahan, our Founder and Executive Director, can give you a tour and update you on what the Lord is doing in every corner of the land.  In the meantime, check out what’s in store for our families and everyone involved with The Ruth Project…including you!

Why a Farm?

Simply put – The Ruth Project is bursting at the seams!  The number of foster families we support has increased 270% since 2021.  We need space – lots of it – to gather families for encouragement.  True to our vision, the Elgin Storehouse already abundantly provides all the tangible provisions families need to foster well, and community connections are being forged between families, within the community, and through partnerships with local businesses.

Yet we have only begun to scratch the surface of providing ongoing support!

The Farm will accommodate so many more of the 7300 foster families in the Chicagoland area providing refuge for over 18,000 children.  It is already a place where parents are coming to take a breath, where kids can be kids in wide open spaces, and where all can be encouraged in ways they cannot experience anywhere else.

“The Farm is the pivotal next step of our vision and mission at The Ruth Project,” says Tammy McMahan. “Ongoing support is our differentiator from every other organization. We deeply understand the foster journey having personally walked through the joys and heartbreak of caring for children. The Farm gives us a place to build relationship and share hope in real and intimate ways.”

Our “bursting at the seams” is a reflection of how The Ruth Project is truly meeting the needs of children and their foster families.  Yet with this incredible growth comes the reality of increased financial needs and operational costs.  We are currently in great need.  We’re praying that out of the Lord’s abundance to the volunteers and supporters He has brought to The Ruth Project, He will also provide for our additional financial needs.

The Farm Transformation

We were amazed at how well-kept the grounds, Farmhouse, and barns were when we arrived at The Farm. We were thrilled about sharing it all with our families so quickly, but every spot still needed to be transformed into spaces specifically designed for them. That’s why over 180 Ruth Project volunteers spent two Saturdays working arm-in-arm to get it done. They persevered through cold, rain, snow, and hail!

The results of their work are amazing! The freshly-painted Ice Cream Shoppe is bright and fun and has already hosted little ones … the Greenhouse is filled with color, freshly planted boxes, and sprouting veggies … Grandpa’s Workshop stands waiting for little woodworkers to work at newly-built benches … the Chicken Coop is already home to 28 chicks and the Animal Barn welcomed Ruthie the donkey and Rudy the calf. And of course, Grandma’s Farmhouse has all the dishes, tableware, and space always set to serve precious families around the Farmhouse table. There’s so much more – you have to see it to believe it!

Our precious volunteers are the reason why our families have been able to experience this refuge so soon after getting The Farm. There is no question The Ruth Project would not exist without you, and we are abundantly grateful!
